Kathmandu Metropolitan City to Revoke Approval of Inactive Schools
Degrees Offered in Nepal

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to begin the process of deregistering institutional schools that are registered but not in operation. The decision was reached during a meeting of the Municipal Education Committee held on Wednesday, 28 Shrawan 2082, under the chairmanship of Mayor and Committee Coordinator Balendra Shah.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragai, Education and Health Committee Coordinator Chin Kaji Maharjan, members of the municipal executive, education experts, school representatives, parent associations, and representatives from institutional school organizations.

During the meeting, the committee discussed several matters, including the addition of classes and subjects in community and institutional schools, changes to names and locations, ownership transfers, relocation of alternative schools, annual budget allocations, and measures for educational reform.

As part of the decisions, Ranidevi Secondary School in Ranibari, Kathmandu-3, received permission to operate Grade 10 from the 2082 academic session. Pashupati Mitra, Geetamata, Janakalyan, Janapath, and Nepal Adarsha Secondary Schools were allowed to introduce Civil and Computer Engineering in Grade 12 under the technical stream. The meeting also considered proposals from 12 institutional schools seeking to add classes and subjects.

Approval was granted to 21 schools for name changes after fulfilling the required documentation, while those still within the 35-day public notice period will be decided later. For schools that exist only on paper or have never commenced operations, KMC’s Education Department will carry out on-site inspections before submitting a report for license cancellation.

Relocation permission was given to Mahila Jyoti, Jayna, and James Model alternative schools. The Education and Health Committee was also tasked with preparing relocation guidelines for institutional schools to be presented in the next committee meeting.

The meeting further decided to review the education sector budget for fiscal year 2082/83 and assess the relevance and impact of the “Book Free Friday” program. A 15-day deadline was set for the submission of this review. Additionally, a taskforce led by Dr. Surya Raj Kafle has been formed to provide recommendations for improving community schools, focusing on operational standards, social and resource mapping, infrastructure, educational quality, and long-term planning. The Education Department will also initiate work on documentation and statute registration for Early Childhood Development programs.

KMC officials stated that these measures aim to improve the quality, accountability, and effectiveness of schools within the metropolitan area, while ensuring that educational institutions operate in line with established standards.
