Anti-Human Trafficking Program Conducted at Kathmandu Model College
Degrees Offered in Nepal

Students of the second and third years of the Bachelor of Arts (BA) program at Kathmandu Model College organized a special event on the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. The program was held at the college seminar hall in the presence of chief guest Ms. Anuradha Koirala, CNN Hero of the Year 2010 and Chairperson of Maiti Nepal, who is widely known as Nepal’s Mother Teresa.

The event aimed to spread awareness about human trafficking, a serious violation of human rights, and to encourage support for ongoing anti-trafficking efforts. With millions of people around the world, especially women and children, affected by trafficking, the students hoped this program would inspire meaningful conversations and actions within and beyond the college. BA Program Head Mr. Elisharaj Rajopadhyay shared that the initiative was led with the intention of engaging the community on this pressing issue.

In her keynote address, Ms. Koirala emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts at national, cross-border, and international levels to fight human trafficking. Students also had the opportunity to interact with her during a special session.

The program featured a drama performance by students that depicted real-life stories of trafficking. It also included an exhibition of paintings, sketches, and posters, which added depth and visual impact to the theme. A student-led research presentation focused on the current situation of human trafficking in Nepal.

Ms. Madhu Gurung, Executive Director of Biswas Nepal, shared her experiences and views, highlighting that human trafficking is a shared social problem and that everyone must take part in raising awareness and protecting the rights of survivors.

In his closing remarks, College Principal Mr. Surendra Subedi thanked Ms. Koirala for accepting the invitation on short notice and for her powerful message to the students. He honored her with a traditional shawl and expressed appreciation to all students and contributors. He reaffirmed the college’s continued support for similar programs in the future.

Mr. Dhruba Prasad Timalsina, Head of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, stated that such events are regularly organized at Kathmandu Model College to support the holistic growth of students. He added that the student-led nature of this program gave meaningful significance to the occasion.

Students took lead roles in coordinating with partner organizations, securing venues, and preparing materials. Their involvement reflects growing awareness and active engagement among youth on issues of social justice.

The United Nations observes July 30 every year as the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. With this program, Kathmandu Model College contributed meaningfully to that global cause.
