The British School Kathmandu was established in Nepal in 1966 by a group of British and Commonwealth parents seeking a British-style education for their children. The school received official recognition from His Majesty’s Government of Nepal on 7 July 1967 and has since operated under the patronage of the British Embassy. In 1997, the school expanded to include Key Stage 3 and relocated to its current campus in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur. The new site was formally inaugurated in February 1998 by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Further expansion took place in August 2004 with the introduction of A Levels, and the school’s first A Level graduates progressed to universities in 2006.
Today, The British School Kathmandu provides education to approximately 585 students aged 3 to 18, representing over 40 nationalities. The school serves both local and expatriate families who place their trust in its care and educational standards.
The British School Kathmandu is a not-for-profit and non-selective institution governed by a Board of Governors elected from the parent body. The school has developed a strong reputation for academic and pastoral excellence. In February 2013, and again in February 2016, the Governors commissioned British Schools Overseas inspections, which concluded that the school delivers an outstanding quality of education and demonstrates exceptional flexibility in meeting students’ learning and personal needs.
The year 2016 marked the school’s 50th anniversary and was accompanied by significant international recognition. The school received the British International School Initiative of the Year award at the 2016 Times Educational Supplement Independent School Awards for its student-led community project in Dhading. Its commitment to community engagement was further acknowledged at the British International School Awards 2017, where it was named Community Initiative of the Year. Additional honours included awards for Senior Leadership Team of the Year and British International School of the Year.
The British School Kathmandu is a member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), and Quality Kathmandu Schools (QKS).
